Larry Symons
Department of Psychology
Dr. Larry Symons believes that the most important thing in his large introductory psychology class is for students to be engaged and think deeply about the topics under consideration. He helps students feel invested in the learning process, learning something they want to learn, rather than ought to learn.
Larry Symons uses short video clips as dynamic overheads, as well as participatory demonstrations, to help maintain students' attention throughout his large introductory psychology course.
Online examinations free up class time for more lecture and discussion and are easier to administer than in-class exams to a very large group, but they must remain sufficiently rigorous to produce meaningful assessment.
Larry Symons describes how low stakes writing assignments let students apply course ideas in writing while remaining manageable in a high-enrollment course.
Using the student-as-consumer metaphor, Larry Symons provides his students with useful extras, such as online materials, while still guiding them toward the learning that matters most.
