Online Tool 7: BigBlueButton

What is BigBlueButton?

BigBlueButton is a web-conferencing tool used primarily for virtual lectures, online office hours, and small-group meetings. It is built into Western’s LMS, Canvas.

How can conferences be used?

Conferences through BigBlueButton can be used for a variety of things, including office hours while you’re off campus, a way to organize special study sessions, or even for an online class. Students can also use it as a way to practice presenting online through the use of student groups. Finally, people who are not traditionally part of your class, such as special guests or other professors, can be added as students or observers for the conference.

Key features

  • BigBlueButton can support up to 50 users at once in a single conference.
  • Files and chat-logs are available throughout the duration of conference, and are automatically deleted once the last member leaves.
  • Conferences can be recorded and viewed up to 14 days afterwards.
  • BigBlueButton can be used in conjunction with a traditional, on-campus class for students that could not make it to campus otherwise.
