Idea 8: Creating Interwoven Class Discussion with Discussion Boards

Instructions

  • Start a face-to-face classroom discussion as usual, still encouraging all students to participate.
  • At the end of class, tell students that the discussion will continue on the online discussion board.
  • Create a thread for students to post to with comments, thoughts, and questions related to the earlier discussion.
    • This can be as simple as stating that this thread is for continuing the discussion, or have a related prompt or question for students to consider.
    • Post in advance to ensure there is no delay.

Advantages

  • Offline - students are able to draw connections to their fellow learners.
  • Online - students are all given a chance to respond at their own pace, and prepare as much as needed.
