Idea 7: Creating Interactive Lessons with TED-Ed

What is Ted-ED?

TED-Ed is a service that can make almost any video almost as functional as an interactive screencast. The software allows professors to add captions, questions, links, and discussion questions to an already published video, and track who watches it and how well they answered any questions.

How do I use Ted-ED?

  • Find a video that you want to use interactively with your students. This does not need to be a TED Talk, but should be on YouTube.
  • Add a title and description to the lesson.
    • Instead of a description, you could add context to the topic, or a learning objective.
  • While watching the video, you can edit the Think, Dig Deeper, and Discuss sections.
    • In Think, you can add multiple choice or short answer questions.
    • In Dig Deeper, you can add additional context, resources, or links.
    • In Discuss, you can add discussion questions.

Advantages

  • Videos can be easily made interactive for students, and easy to check understanding.
  • If a student gets a multiple-choice question wrong, the video can play the part of the video where the information was covered.
  • TED-Ed can be used in conjunction with a screencast.
    • If the screencast is uploaded to YouTube, you can use TED-Ed to make it interactive.
