Idea 22: Giving Voice Feedback on Assignments through Canvas

Why give Voice Feedback?

For assignments submitted to Canvas, giving voice feedback in lieu of typing comments can save time, be more personal, and be more useful for the average student.

How does it work?

  • Be sure you have a microphone or headset active on your computer.
  • Open SpeedGrader for the student’s submitted assignment.
  • Click on the Webcam icon in the lower right corner.
  • Be sure to choose audio comment. (Video comments can also be done using your webcam.)
  • Once the comment is recorded, it will create a URL for students to follow to access it.
  • Remind students they will need to copy and paste the comment into a browser; it is not an active hyperlink.

Advantages

  • Quicker to comment for less effort.
  • Professors can typically give more feedback audibly than they can by typing.
  • Hearing comments helps build the relationship between the student and the professor.
  • Students are able to better understand the feedback, and are more likely to act on it.
  • Subtle nuisances that can be lost in text are easier to pick up verbally.
