Idea 21: Using Twitter for Collaborative Writing

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a free online social networking service that allows members to send 140-character or less messages called tweets to other members. Tweets can be searched by their hash tags.

Instructions

  • Share the hash tag with the class. Make sure it is easily identifiable, and unique.
  • Start with an initial tweet.
    • This can either be a prompt for another student to follow, or the first 140-character segment.
  • Students will each add another chunk to the writing through a tweet.
    • If two students continue a tweet, you could ignore (or delete) the one with the later timestamp.
  • Once everyone has replied, the due date has passed, or the session naturally ends the assignment is complete.

Advantages

  • Students are restricted to a maximum of 140 characters per tweet, emphasizing the importance of brevity
  • Students have to interact with and add to other students writing.
  • Outside participants can join in, extending the assignment out of the confines of the class roster.
  • Students can easily share the hash tag for easy exposure and views.
