Idea 20: Using Crocodoc in Canvas

What is Crocodoc?

Crocodoc is a tool that allows on-screen mark-up and text comments on an online submission in Canvas. Crocodoc automatically recognizes Word, PDF, and other common file types. Crocodoc offers many of the same tools as seen in Microsoft Word’s “review” feature, but within the Canvas framework.

Best Practices

  • Be specific with your expectations.
  • Don’t let the project content or parameters be too broad.
  • Before expecting students to use a software tool for an actual assignment, give them a chance to use it and practice.
  • Don’t make the project open-ended.
  • For example, specify a length for videos, or a number of pages for websites.
  • Emphasize the importance of proper planning prior to starting the actual project.
  • It can be easy for students to jump right into the work, but it will likely hurt their final product.
  • Create deadlines for various parts of the project throughout the quarter.
  • Requiring sections to be due at certain points can help students keep on track, and act as formative assessment.
