Idea 14: Creating Digital Storytelling to Cement Understanding

What is Digital Storytelling?

In a digital story, students explain various things in a simplified manner using sounds, video, narration, and images.  With just a camera and a computer, students can take complex concepts and create videos to explain them in simplified (and interesting) ways.

Advantages

  • Software is widely available for students to use, ranging from MovieMaker to iMovie to Final Cut, as well as a plethora of apps.
  • Creating the videos requires higher levels of thinking on Blooms Taxonomy.
    • Students need to be able to synthesize, analyze, and evaluate content.
  • Students require a strong understanding of a concept to properly simplify it for video.
  • Projects are easy to share both in the classroom and electronically.
  • Students are able to be as creative as they like through the format.
