INNOVATIVE TEACHING SHOWCASE

2012
2013
ISSUE 14

This year's Showcase theme, Teaching Civic Engagement, honors WWU faculty who have envisioned what it means to help students be active citizens engaged in their communities.

THEME

ROBIN KODNER, Assistant Professor in the Biology Department, teaches Biometrics by drawing upon her background as an outdoor science educator and her interest in making statistics exciting for students by connecting the "data" to real-world applications and helping local non-profit agencies.

GENE MYERS, Professor in the Environmental Studies Department, brings his philosophy for empowering students to make decisions about their education and the world to all his courses, focusing on experiential education opportunities that will shape their experience with this planet for a lifetime.

SHEILA WEBB, Associate Professor in the Journalism Department, creates authentic and engaging "client interactions" for her Advanced Visual Journalism students by having them work in teams with community partners to develop marketing and media materials, mostly for nonprofit social service organizations.

Through civic engagement, individuals—as citizens of their communities, their nations, and the world—are empowered as agents of positive social change for a more democratic world.
