Ideas to Infuse Multiculturalism Setting Up with the Role of "Teacher"

IDEAS

Idea 17: Setting Up Student with the Role of "Teacher"

Why is it important?

When students are given the opportunity to teach on material, they are more likely to understand the information on a deeper level. Assigning more leaderhsip roles or potential for students to act as an informant during class provides students with the opportunity to delve into the topic to fully understand it.

Instructions

  • Choose specific topics, readings, or themes from the syllabus and assign them to students
  • Instruct students to create a teaching plan for one class, and center the information presented, outside sources, and discussion questions on diversity and multiculturalism
  • Allow students to take the class sessions to present in pairs or individually

Advantages

  • Allows for students to explain their interpretations of the themes of the class to their peers
  • Promotes a more detailed understanding of the topic, as to help the student become an expert on the topic and then explain it in more colloquial terms
  • Encourages students to find outside information and articulate it in a way that fits in with the class
