IDEAS

Idea 16: Assigning a "Jukebox for Justice" Assignment

Why is it important?

With this assignment, students will have the opportunity to take what they are learning in class and find real-life applications of the key themes, consolidating the ideas.

Instructions

  • Prompt students to select a song related to issues of social justice
  • Instruct students to analyze the social, cultural, and political messages in the songs
  • Have students then create a visual representation of the song’s message, an overview of the issue, and the relevance of the song and context to contemporary society

Advantages

  • Encourages appreciation of multicultural impacts on society
  • Promotes understanding of universal themes of trial and triumph
  • Students will have the opportunity to empathize with the songs they analyze and the contexts that the songs were created in.
